Clinical Interests: Dr. Nelson joined the department to establish a research program in clinical psychoacoustics. His goal was to develop a research program that investigated basic- and applied-aspects of sensorineural hearing loss. His research program involves both patients with moderate-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss, and patients who are deaf and use a cochlear implant.

Research Interests: Clinical Psychoacoustics – hearing perception in persons with impaired hearing. Dr. Nelson directs federally funded research programs in acoustic hearing and electric hearing. His investigations involve experiments designed to help understand the hearing process itself, to find better ways to overcome hearing loss through acoustic amplification, and to find better ways to send sound to the brain through direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve in deaf ears.
