Professor

Research

After completing the post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Duesseldorf, Dr. Juhn joined the Department of Otolaryngology (Head: Dr. Michael Paparella) and established the Auditory Biochemistry Labortory. The followings are major projects of the Laboratory:

1. Pioneered biochemical aspect of middle ear inflammation dealing with the nature of middle ear effusion (both human and animals in experimental otitis media) and the effects of inflammatory mediators on the inner ear tissues and function.

2. Established the biochemical nature of inner ear fluid and factors involved in the alteration of the fluid composition in experimental otitis media (stress hormones and inflammatory mediators).

3. Established the concept of a blood-labyrinth barrier and its role in the inner ear function.

4. Biochemical pathology of age-related hearing loss and management.

5. Application of stem cells on the restoration of inner ear lateral wall and auditory function.

6. New treatment strategies for otitis media.

7. Identification of candidate genes in familial Meniere’s Disease.
